A View of Dedham Vale
What at first glance appears to be an ordinary landscape, without notice begins a subtle change. The clouds seem to move, the meadows expand and the colors change from dark to light. As we follow these changes the picture recreates in us a long-forgotten, pleasant feeling.
Both Turner and Constable were leading figures in landscape painting in England, and throughout their lifetimes continued to paint the familiar scenes of their own land. Their commitment to painting nature as it is was recognized not only in England but also in France where they influenced Millet and others of the Barbizon School.
