Tax Types
Everyone who lives in Japan has to pay a variety of taxes, the most common being the individual inhabitant taxes, income tax and motor verhicle tax. Visit the website of the Ministry of Finance＜外部リンク＞ for more information.
Individual Inhabitant Taxes
This tax is paid by people who have an address in Japan as of January 1 and had income in the previous year. You will receive a payment slip from the City Hall which you have to pay before the payment deadline. In some cases your employer may deduct the amount from your salary and pay it on your behalf.

Income Tax
This tax is imposed on the income that you earn. Your employer might deduct the amount from your salary to pay it on your behalf.

Motor Vehicle Tax
This tax is paid by people who own a motor vehicle as of April 1. This tax is seperated into categories, based on the type of motor vehicle. You will receive a payment slip which you have to pay before the payment deadline.

Other Taxes
Other taxes include the Environmental Performance-Based Motor Vehicle Tax＜外部リンク＞ that you pay when you purchase a motor vehicle, the Fixed Property Tax if you own a house or land, and the consumption tax when buying goods.
Leaving Japan and Taxes
People that leave Japan before receiving their tax noticed must assign someone who lives in Koriyama City as their "Tax Agent" (Japanese). You can complete the procedure at the Property Tax Division at the Koriyama City Hall, at a Brance Office, or at the Civic Service Center.
