Renting a home

There are two ways to rent a home in Japan.

"Public housing" and "private rental housing."

Public housing

These refer to prefectural housing<外部リンク> provided by the prefectural government, and municipal housing provided by Koriyama.
To move in, prospective residents must meet several criteria such as a certain income.
Please visit the Fukushima Prefectural Office website or Koriyama City Hall website for details.

Inquiries for municipal housing:

Private rental housing

You can search for a house at a real estate agent. Keep in mind that in Japan you may have to pay a security deposit (shikikin), key money (reikin) and a renewal fee in addition to the rent when you rent a house.

Introducing yourself after you move in

In Japan it is customary for people who move in to introduce themselves to their neighbors.
By making this introduction, people generally get to know each other better, and can feel more comfortable with each other.

Neighborhood associations and residents’ associations etc.

These are groups where people who live in the same community interact and engage in activities such as for traffic safety and crime prevention.
Activities are paid for by people in the community.
If you have any questions, please ask your neighbors.
